Picnik made me laugh: "fantastically interesting and relevant ads"

Right after I finally signed up for a Picnik account, they asked for some personal info:

I'm really learning to appreciate good "copy" (by the way, the word "copy" rubs me the wrong way...) I know it's really trendy for websites these days to be a little cheeky and try to distinguish themselves from the rest by having quirky little messages, like

Flickr is having a massage:
Twitter is over capacity (the fail whale is now iconic...): http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_story_of_the_fail_whale.php

In fact, in searching for links, I found this Flickr group for Web 2.0 error pages: http://www.flickr.com/groups/web20error/pool/

Anyway, error messages are run of the mill, other sites try to make every communication with their users "memorable"... what do you think about this?

What I did today after work

I meant to leave work before the sun went down, but even having just switched to daylight savings time I still only made it out barely before it dropped below the horizon.

I walked another way home than usual, hoping to find that one supermarket open after 8pm that also takes credit cards. Even though I've lived in this apartment and work nearby, I still have very little sense of direction. I thought I was taking a shortcut, but as time went by I oscillated between worrying about getting lost and reminding myself that I wasn't in any sort of hurry and that it was good exercise. As much as walking around listening to Rachel Maddow can be considered good exercise.

I did find amazingly stumble across a Rewe, which was officially open until 10pm, though at quarter to 9 as I walked in I was dodging those pallet shifters and dancing out of reach of gigantic floor polishers/sweepers. There were only a few sad Broetchen left in the bakery section, but bagged them anyway, together with a container of bacon egg salad, a bag of frozen gyros+rice stovetop meal, a bag of oranges, and a bag of salt-flavored chips.

Salt-flavored because I detest the standard paprika-flavored chips for culinary reasons and the "oriental"-flavored chips for their taste but more honestly the cultural implications of having an "oriental" flavor.

I came home to my roommate's girlfriend's son sleeping in the kitchen. I darted in to freeze the bag of gyros & rice, darted out to snack on the bag of chips, Broetchen, and egg sald.

Meanwhile, I spent another $5.56 at the Amazon Kindle store, even though I don't own a Kindle, just the Kindle program on my iPod Touch.

Photos from an Unusual Weather Day in Hamburg - Flash Blizzard & Fiery Sunset

When I first woke up today, the sun was out, people on twitter were all a-flutter about how bright it was outside. Yes, I check my email and twitterstream on my iPod Touch before I get out of bed.

By the time I got out of bed, got ready for work, and made it out the door, it had started snowing. This was NOT expected. The snow kept getting heavier, the flakes larger, the wind stronger. As I walked down the alley to work, I was holding up one of those large blue Ikea bags to shield me from being pummeled by the force of the wind throwing these huge clumps of snow at me.

This evening, my coworker Svenja pointed out the unusual sunset. We've got a great view from the 6th floor (5th floor as Germans count it) and every once in a while the sky cooperates.

NY Times Piece on Steven Chu perpetuates model minority stereotypes

He comes from a family of academic overachievers. His father emigrated from China to study chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and retired as a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. His mother studied economics in China and at M.I.T. One brother, Gilbert, is a professor of medicine and biochemistry at Stanford; the other, Morgan, is a highly regarded intellectual property lawyer in Los Angeles. Dr. Chu once described himself as the academic black sheep of the family.

hi, meet your new dorky noble-prize-winning SOOOPERnerd Secretary of Energy who's better at science than with dealing with people-skill stuff like GIGANTIC BUREAUCRACY.
